As winter tightens its grip, several regions in North India are grappling with an intense cold wave, with temperatures plummeting below zero in some areas. The picturesque hilly landscapes of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir are now draped in a fresh blanket of snow, further contributing to the bone-chilling conditions.

According to the latest forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), light to moderate rainfall is expected in Kerala and Mahe over the next two days, accompanied by isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. Additionally, Sikkim is likely to witness hailstorms today, while Arunachal Pradesh is expected to experience similar conditions on December 13.

Dense fog in various regions

Dense fog is predicted during morning hours in isolated pockets over Punjab on December 12-13, as well as over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura from December 12-14.

Steady minimum temperatures

The IMD has projected no significant change in minimum temperatures over most parts of the country for the next 4-5 days. Currently, minimum temperatures hover in the range of 6-10°C over significant regions, including Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh-Delhi, North Rajasthan, and many parts of Uttar Pradesh.

Delhi weather update

In the national capital, the Met Office has provided a weather update, stating that there is no likelihood of showers until December 17. The forecast predicts clear skies with shallow to moderate fog in the morning, contributing to the winter chill across the city. Delhi has been contending with air quality categorised as ‘severe’ to ‘very poor’ over the last few weeks.
