IILM University ramps up its legal education this year; cashes in on changing laws

As we bid farewell to 2023, it’s evident that legal education in India has undergone transformational changes to meet the demands of the contemporary era. Throughout the year, the landscape witnessed dynamic developments, adapting to challenges through technological integration and a focus on practical skills via moot courts and legal clinics. The curriculum evolved to address emerging legal areas, with digital libraries playing a pivotal role, Asha Verma, pro vice-chancellor and professor, Law, IILM University, told FE Education. “In our year-end reflection, we have incorporated vital modules that align with the shifting legal landscape. These modules include Technology and Legal Tech Integration, Data Privacy and Cybersecurity, Environmental Law and SDGs and Global and Comparative Law, employing interdisciplinary approaches,” she said.

In 2022, the National Crime Records Bureau reported a surge in cybercrime cases across India, reaching a total of 65,893, marking a notable 24.4% increase from2021. With cybercrime incidents reaching a peak, IILM University claims to address this growing concern. The university asserts to provide courses that delve into essential aspects of cyberspace, including legal frameworks, regulations and policies. “These courses cover a range of topics such as Information Technology Law, Cybercrime Law and Investigations, Data Privacy and Protection, Computer and Network Security Law, E-Commerce Law and Digital Forensics,” she said.

The university asserts its provision of integrated programmes, including a five-year Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws with Honors (BA LLB Hons) and Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Laws with Honors (BBA LLB Hons), along with a one-year Master of Laws (LLM) in seven specialised fields and PhD. The BA LLB (hons) programme at the university carries a tuition fee averaging Rs 10 lakh for the entire five-year duration. In contrast, the LLM programme has a fee of Rs 1.5 lakh for its one-year duration, according to IILM University’s official website.

All year long, IILM University asserts to have created a student-friendly environment, fostering a sense of community and support. It claims to have adopted a ‘Student Support Grievance Redressal System,’ ensuring that every concern is addressed with care and efficiency. “To create a holistic environment we continuously offer various avenues such as Moot Court Competitions, Legal Clinics, Internships, Guest Lectures, Industry Interaction, Legal Research Opportunities, Competitions, Events, Professional Development Workshops and community engagement initiatives,” Verma said.
