Desi creators steal the show at New Delhi’s Comic Con
Comic Con 2023 unfolded as a spectacle of creativity and innovation, with desi comic artists stealing the spotlight and transforming New Delhi’s NSIC exhibition grounds into a vibrant hub of imagination and storytelling. From December 8th to the 10th, the convention played host to a glorious celebration of the rich and diverse world of Indian comics.
Amidst the Aquaman-themed exhibits and the bustling crowd of Marvel and DC cosplayers, artists from across the country gathered to showcase their creative endeavors. Among them, Amrit Pal Singh stood out, presenting and selling what he calls “Toy Faces.” “These are portraits of iconic artists or individuals who inspire me. I sold them as NFTs and featured them in exhibitions worldwide,” he said. Singh shared that Comic Con provides a unique platform to connect with a younger audience, offering a bridge to those who might not frequent traditional art fairs as much.
The global influence of comic storytelling was also evident in the works of Mohammad Ali Vakil, the creator of Sufi Comics. Growing up in Dubai, Vakil drew inspiration from a rich depository of Sufi stories, transforming them into comics. Reflecting on the evolving landscape of comic consumption, he emphasised the growing trend of digital content consumption. “Indian superheroes are here to give global counterparts competition,” Vakil declared confidently.
Saumin Suresh Patel, a Bombay-based comic artist, shared his journey from art school to developing iconic characters like “G-man” for Parle-G and creating comics for the movie Agent Vinod. Currently working with Indusworks, Patel crafts contemporary stories featuring Indian heroes and villains, tackling issues such as intense desi parents, the fake news crisis, and fighting the mafia.
Bengaluru-based Gaurav Basu, known as Acid Toad, expressed his happiness at the opportunity for Indian creators to showcase their content at such events. He anticipated a significant decade ahead for creators, envisioning increased exposure and recognition.
The event got not just newcomers but also veterans. Savio Mascarenhas, group art director of the iconic Amar Chitra Katha, shared insights into the enduring appeal of Indian comics. Despite facing stiff competition from global giants like Marvel, DC, and Manga, Mascarenhas highlighted the unique storytelling approach that sets Indian comics apart. “Integrating history and culture into narratives, these comics become a nostalgic bridge for parents to introduce their children to the enchanting world of storytelling,” he said.
Delhi’s Comic Con 2023, powered by Crunchyroll, not only featured the creative brilliance of Desi comic artists but also offered a gaming arena with racing simulators, virtual reality games, Playstation consoles, daily tournaments, esports, popular streamers, and immersive gaming experiences. As the curtains fell on this edition, the anticipation for the next chapters of creativity rose, with Hyderabad Comic Con scheduled for January 27th and 28th, 2024, followed by Chennai Comic Con on February 17th and 18th, 2024.
