India and Oman: A time-honoured partnership
India and Oman share a friendship deeply rooted in history, culture, and economics. The ties between the two countries go back an astonishing 5000 years. Formal diplomatic relations were established in 1955, and in 2008, the relationship was elevated to a Strategic Partnership.
According to sources, “Politically, the bond has remained strong with regular visits by Prime Ministers from both nations. The visits of leaders like Rajiv Gandhi, PV Narasimha Rao, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and Dr Manmohan Singh have cemented the bilateral relationship. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Oman in 2018 marked a significant chapter in this enduring friendship.”
Oman is home to a thriving Indian expatriate community, exceeding 700,000 individuals, contributing significantly to Oman’s economic development. “Professionals like doctors, engineers, chartered accountants, and healthcare workers form an integral part of this vibrant community. Notably, some Indian merchant families have been living in Oman for 200-300 years.”
Defence Cooperation between the two countries
Defence cooperation stands out, with Oman being India’s closest defence partner in the Gulf region. All three services of the Indian Armed Forces regularly engage in bilateral exercises and service-level staff talks with Oman.
Both countries are keen on preserving maritime safety and security in the region as both are maritime neighbours. They also share the coastline with the Arabian Sea.
The two countries over the past few years have worked together towards ensuring maritime security in the Indian Ocean.
Cultural Ties
Cultural ties are fostered through various exchanges, showcasing the rich heritage of both nations. Recently, the National Museum of Oman displayed a collection of iconic Indian artworks, including pieces by renowned artists like Raja Ravi Varma and Amrita Sher-Gill.
“Health cooperation is a shining example of collaborative efforts. Indian hospitals in Oman offer advanced medical care, while Ayurveda and yoga find popularity, particularly among the local youth,” said the source quoted above.
Adding, “India’s invitation to Oman to participate in the G-20 Summit underscores the strength of their international collaboration. Oman actively engaged in over 150 working group meetings and various G20 Ministerial meetings, demonstrating its commitment to global cooperation.”
The enduring partnership between India and Oman traverses time, encompassing political, economic, defence, cultural, and health dimensions. This collaboration not only benefits the two nations but also contributes to the broader landscape of international relations.
