‘Beacon of hope’: PM Modi hails SC verdict upholding Article 370 abrogation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday hailed the Supreme Court’s verdict upholding the government’s decision to abrogate Article 370 of the Constitution as ‘historic.’ He said that it is not just a legal judgment but a ‘beacon of hope’ and a testament to the collective resolve to build a stronger and more united India.

The reaction followed the Supreme Court’s ruling which upheld the Union government’s 2019 decision to revoke the special status granted by Article 370 to the former state of Jammu and Kashmir. Furthermore, the court mandated that the elections for the legislative assembly of Jammu and Kashmir be held by September 30, 2024.

The Prime Minister said the Supreme Court’s decision on the abrogation of Article 370 was ‘historic,’ affirming its constitutional alignment with the Parliament’s action on August 5, 2019.

Taking it to X, PM Modi said, “Today’s Supreme Court verdict on the abrogation of Article 370 is historic and constitutionally upholds the decision taken by the Parliament of India on 5th August 2019; it is a resounding declaration of hope, progress and unity for our sisters and brothers in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. The Court, in its profound wisdom, has fortified the very essence of unity that we, as Indians, hold dear and cherish above all else.”

He continued, “I want to assure the resilient people of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh that our commitment to fulfilling your dreams remains unwavering. We are determined to ensure that the fruits of progress not only reach you but also extend their benefits to the most vulnerable and marginalised sections of our society who suffered due to Article 370.”

PM Modi termed the verdict a beacon of hope, a promise of a brighter future, for the the people of ‘Naya Jammu and Kashmir.’

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah also praised the judgment, underscoring the Prime Minister’s statement, terming the judgment as a promise of a brighter future and ‘Naya Jammu and Kashmir.’

He further asserted that this abrogation marks the restoration of rights for the poor and deprived, mentioning stone pelting and separatism as past issues. He emphasized the strength and bond that have been strengthened by this judgment. He expressed that the bonds of unity have been bolstered, reaffirming the strengthened integrity with Bharat. It signifies the reinstatement of Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh as integral parts of our nation, a status that has always been and will persist.

He further noted that under the leadership of PM Modi, the government is committed to establishing lasting peace in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
