Parliament attack 22nd anniversary: PM Modi, Amit Shah pay tribute to fallen jawans

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday observed a minute of silence at the Parliament to pay tribute to the fallen Jawans on the 22 years since the Parliament attack. He, along with Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, also met the family members of those who lost their lives in the 2001 Parliament attack.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP national president JP Nadda, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, and other leaders were also present at the Parliament to pay tribute to the martyrs.

PM Modi in a post on X wrote, “”Today, we remember and pay heartfelt tributes to the brave security personnel martyred in the Parliament attack in 2001. Their courage and sacrifice in the face of danger will forever be etched in our nation’s memory.”

What happened in the 2001 Parliament Attack?

On December 13 2001, five militants breached security and entered the Parliament in a car using fake Home Ministry and Parliament labels on it. At that time, both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha had been adjourned, but over 100 people were present in the building.

The gunmen were heavily armed with automatic weapons, grenades, and explosives. They were later identified as members of two Pakistan-based militant groups, Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed.

The attack resulted in the deaths of six Delhi Police personnel, two Parliament Security Service personnel, and a gardener. All five attackers were also killed during the gunfight. They were identified as Hamza Haider, alias Tufail, Rana, Ranvijay, and Mohammed from JeM.

December 13 2023, marks 22 years since the deadly attack on the Indian Parliament.
