President Droupadi Murmu, during her address at the 2nd convocation of the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Lucknow on Tuesday, articulated that India is guided by what she referred to as the “5 Ds” – Demand, Demography, Democracy, Desire, and Dream.

According to the President, these 5Ds play a pivotal role in India’s developmental journey. She underscored the significance of students at IIIT Lucknow not only aligning themselves with this vision but also contributing their utmost to its realisation.

Expressing satisfaction that India is a key player in the 4th Industrial Revolution, she acknowledged the country’s emergence as a global hub for technologies like artificial intelligence, machine learning, the Internet of Things and blockchain.

While acknowledging the transformative potential of AI and contemporary technologies, President Murmu stressed the importance of addressing ethical dilemmas associated with their use. She pointed out challenges such as automation-induced unemployment, economic inequality, and human bias resulting from AI, emphasising the need for creative solutions.

President Murmu called for a balanced approach, emphasising the importance of ‘Emotional Intelligence’ alongside ‘Artificial Intelligence’. She emphasised that AI should serve as a means to enhance the quality of human life, with every decision benefiting those at the lowest socioeconomic levels.

Commending IIIT Lucknow for attaining the status of ‘Institute of National Importance,’ she regarded it as a testament to the institution’s ability, capability, and efficiency. The President expressed expectations that IIIT Lucknow would not only maintain the highest standards in education but also establish dimensions of excellence that set benchmarks.

Highlighting the positive step of acquiring knowledge in regional languages and commending the establishment of the Incubation Center C.R.E.A.T.E., President Murmu recognised these initiatives as critical in removing obstacles to knowledge enhancement due to linguistic limitations.

She acknowledged the curriculum’s focus on artificial intelligence and its applications, noting that it equips students with essential skills to navigate the evolving technological landscape.
