‘Grave matter’: Kharge demands Amit Shah’s statement on Parliament security breach

Congress president and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, on Thursday, wrote to Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar over Wednesday’s security breach in the Parliament, reiterating the opposition’s demand for a statement by Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the incident.

He also wrote, “Further, till the Minister of Home Affairs makes a statement on this matter followed by a discussion under Rule 267, there is no occasion for taking up any other business in the House or even for any meeting with a view to “sort out this matter” in any other manner.”

The opposition has launched an all-out offensive over the security breach in the Lok Sabha, cornering the government over the massive lapse and demanding a statement from the Home minister in both Houses of Parliament.

Parliament security breach

Two men – identified as Sagar Sharma and Manoranjan D – jumped into the Lok Sabha chamber from the visitors’ gallery during the Zero Hour on Wednesday afternoon. They were carrying gas canisters that emitted yellow gas into the House and caused chaos. At the same time, two people – a man and a woman – opened yellow smoke canisters outside the Parliament complex.

All the four accused arrested in connection with the security breach have been charged under the anti-terror law Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act besides sections of the Indian Penal Code. One more accused was arrested from his residence in Gurugram on Wednesday evening. Meanwhile, raids are being conducted at several places to nab Lalit Jha, suspected to be the key conspirator.
